Abstract

New heat capacity measurements are presented. Results show that the NH4 + behaves as a strongly hindered top, in agreement with data of quasielastic neutron scattering. The librational contribution of NH4 + to the heat capacity is analyzed in connection with the crystal symmetry and the structural phase transition at 268.6 K.
