Optical modulator utilizing total reflection

Pages 229-234 | Published online: 10 Feb 2011

Abstract

Proposed is an optical modulator utilizing the total reflection. The optical modulator is made by adhering an interdigital transducer (IDT) on the bottom surface of prism. When the surface acoustic wave emitted by the IDT propagate along the bottom surface of prism and a beam is incident on the surface from below with larger angle than the critical angle, the beam reflected totally is modulated by disturbance caused by the surface acoustic wave.
