Abstract

Optical phase conjugation using two new optically addressed chiral smectic liquid crystal spatial light modulators as phase conjugate mirrors are investigated. These two devices employ SmA and SmC liquid crystals and perform optical phase conjugation with optical response times of 40 μs and 155 μs, respectively, with total incident beam intensities of less than 1 mW/cm2. The measured diffraction efficiencies are 1.8% and 8.5%, respectively.
