Abstract
Structural studies of [(CH3)4N]2ZnBr4 and [(CH3)4N]2MBr4 showed the changes of symmetry from orthorhombic to monoclinic at the phase transitions and the crystals are expected to be ferroelastic. To find ferroelastic properties the microscopic observations were done and an influence of external stresses were investigated. Observations along the b-axis showed an appearance of stripe-like domain structure with domain walls perpendicular to the c-axis at 286 K and 273 K for [(CH3)4N]2ZnBr4 and [(CH3)4N]2MnBr4, respectively. The changes of domain pattern and monodomain state is easily achieved by application of the stress to the b-45° cut samples and prove ferroelasticity of both crystals.
