In improper ferroelastics, particularly in Hg2Br2and KSCN, the properties of the antiphase boundaries (APB's) depend on their orientation. The angular dependence of the free energy and the APB thickness were derived11 for the APB's with the structure represented by a kink-solution. It is shown that such APB is sometime unstable and splits into two ferroelastic domain walls (FDW's). It corresponds to the nucleation of a ferroelastic domain in the APB centre and depends on the APB orientation.
