Abstract

The evanescent field approach has been followed to implement electro-optical switching in fiber using nematic liquid crystals whose refractive indecies are compatible with silica fiber. The device is formed using a pair of etched fibers as waveguides and spacers for the LC cell, and then is switched by the orientation of LC. The extinction ratio of TE and TM is measured.
