Heat capacity of antiferroelectric liquid crystals

Abstract

Heat capacity of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal MHPBC has been measured with both an ac method and a relaxation method. A λ-shaped anomaly was observed at the Sm A-Sm Cα* transition in both ac and relaxation mode measurement, and this anomaly was found to be described by a Landau-type free energy. On the other hand, the anomalies at the restructuring transitions between chiral smectic C phases were detected only in relaxation mode. These features are the same as those reported earlier for MHPOBC and MHPOCBC. The parameters of the Landau-fits to the anomalies for MHPBC, MHPOBC, and MHPOCBC have been compared.
