Abstract
Magnetoelectric effect and piezomagnetism can be considered as related phenomena if we restrict our attention to the antiferromagnetic materials. Both phenomena are connected with a transition of the crystal from a pure antiferromagnetic state into a weak ferromagnetic state. This transition is caused by an external action (electric field or stress), which changes the magnetic symmetry of the system. A short review is given of the experimental study of piezomagnetism (M i = Λijk σjk) and the reverse phenomena-linear (with respect to the applied magnetic field) magnetostriction (u jk = ΛijjHi) and magnetooptic effect. The list of all compounds in which these effects were observed IS presented.
