Magnetic field induced second harmonic generation

Abstract

Magnetizing a material usually changes the original symmetry and leads to additional nonzero nonlinear optical coefficients, that should yield observable nonlinear effects. We have observed this on a number of magnetic systems, in particular on multilayers of magnetic and nonmagnetic materials. For the latter it can be shown that Second Harmonic Generation specifically probes the interface magnetic properties. PACS numbers: 78.20.Bz, 42.65.Ky, 75.70.Cn
