Piezoelectric effect of plant leaf

Pages 211-215 | Received 30 Oct 1994, Published online: 26 Oct 2011

Abstract

The observation of bending piezoelectric effect and the measurement of the dielectric constant were performed for leaves of lily and bamboo before withering. The bending piezoelectric constants β = 70 × 10−9 C/m for lily and β = 12 × 10−9 C/m for bamboo were obtained, which were in the same level as that for a poled PVDF. The value of the dielectric constant was as high as 500–2000 in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 1 MHz. When the sample was mechanically clamped, the dielectric constant decreased almost to half, suggesting the converse piezoelectric effect.
