Permutation classification of domain pairs

Abstract

We show that the relationships between domain states of a distorted phase can be characterized by a transitive permutation representation of the point group of the parent phase. We use the permutation properties of domain states to introduce a permutation classification of domain pairs, i.e. unordered pairs of domain states. This classification provides a suitable basis for determination of tensor distinction of domain states. The advantage of chosen approach is that permutation properties of domain states and thus also the classification of domain pairs are identical for a wide range of so-called exomorphic phase transitions, which may differ by the symmetry of both the parent and the distorted phase. An illustrative example is supplied.
