Abstract
A solid solution of lead scandium niobate, Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PSN), and lead titanate, PbTiO3, namely, Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)1–x Ti x O3 (PSNT100x) are studied for the composition (x = 0.425) with the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). The effects of an additive of Nb ions are described on their ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. X-ray diffraction patterns for the PSNT42.5 ceramics show a single phase of a perovskite structure. Curie temperature, Tc , of Nb-added PSNT42.5 ceramics shifts to higher temperature as compared with that (Tc = 285°C) of no additive. Remanent polarization, Pr reaches maximum (27 μC/cm2) at added 2 wt% Nb2O5. Electromechanical coupling factors, k 33 = 0.66, k 31 = 0.347, kt = 0.627 and kp = 0.563, also show maximum values for +Nb2O5 (2 wt%).
