Abstract

Strontium niobate, Sr 2 Nb 2 O 7, was prepared by the chemical coprecipitation method at low temperatures, using Sr 2 Cl 2.6H 2 O, NbCl 5 and HO 2 CCO 2 H. Sr 2 Nb 2 O 7 was synthesized at 800°C via an intermediate phase close to the composition of Sr 5 Nb 4 O 15 at 700°C. The resulting powder was observed to have a finer and more uniform particle size distribution, as compared to those obtained through conventional methods. These powder characteristics lowered the optimum sintering temperature down to 1400°C without sacrificing the desired dielectric and piezoelectric properties. Grain orientation along the [0k0] direction, which resulted in improved electrical properties, was also observed.
