Optical transmission spectra and domain structure of KH2PO4

Abstract

Spatial configurations of longitudinal and transverse domains are analyzed on the basis of the optical transmission spectra of polarized light in multiply domained KDP samples. The transmission spectra were calculated for a model of a domain structure consisting of periodic (with the period of 2L=33μm) domain subsystems generating a Cantor set. It was shown that the observed spectra differ substantially from the calculated ones. Qualitative accordance with the experimental results can be achieved only in the case where the transversal domain thickness has a Gaussian distribution. The assumption of the fragmentation of every domain according to the Cantor set remains valid.
