Abstract

A pure transverse acoustic c66 mode of KHCO3 has been observed by the 90° Brillouin scattering experiment as functions of a shear-stress σ′6 and temperature T. The shear-stress-induced ferrodistortive phase is newly found from an anomalous softening behavior of the c66 mode, and a σ′6T phase diagram is successfully fabricated. This phase diagram indicates that there is a triple point at T = 317.2 K and δ'6 = 4.4 kPa.
