Polar direction of NaNO₂ crystal induced by AC electric field

Abstract

The application of an AC electric field to a c-plate of NaNO₂ could induce the ferroelectric polarization normal to the plate. Nucleation of the regions with different orientation was observed by a polarized light microscope. They are classified into two kinds; one is the 011 twin region and another is that having a complicated relation in orientation with respect to the matrix. Their crystallographic orientation were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.
