Based upon interpretation of maps covering roughly 300 years, supplemented by land registers and statistics, the agricultural development of two characteristic parishes in the western part of Denmark is described from a human-ecological viewpoint focusing upon the changing conditions in the interplay between man and environment. From a total dependence on local resources, this rural district has steadily increased its interchange with other markets during the last 100 years.
