Pages 279-287 | Published online: 11 Aug 2020

ABSTRACT

This article describes the major tectonic framework of Yunnan, and highlights lithological features that control various aspects of the landscape in this remote province of south-west China. Emphasis is placed on important existing and developing tourism centres. These include: the Kunming lakes region, the Er Hai area, the first bend of the Yangtze and the neighbouring Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Jiuxiang Special Scenic Area, and the Stone Forest near Lunan. These locations are increasingly affected by a diversity of agricultural and urban activities, as well as local and international tourism.
