ABSTRACT
Spectacular iconic buildings, exciting vibrant streetscapes, prestigious cultural and sports events are among the many characteristics of sensational cities. This article explores some of the ‘sensational’ facets of cities today and their relevance to contemporary urbanism. For the city and the visitor this is often associated with the thrill of the new and the positive (and negative outcomes) accrued from being responsible for, a participant in, or simply having gazed on, the newest, most dramatic and distinctive urban realms.
