ABSTRACT

The Geographical Association (GA) has produced A framework for the school geography curriculum (GA, 2022), which sets out the nature of the school subject, its disciplinary foundations and the significant features of geography that should underlie any geography curriculum or set of curriculum requirements at national level. The framework was produced in response to observed failings in the processes of national curriculum and qualification production, which have created professional and educational issues in several UK nations over a significant period of time. The framework responds to these issues by identifying curriculum development responsibilities at various levels of the education system and setting out how these can work together in support of high-quality school geography curricula. The initiative may be understood as part of a wider movement by a number of subject organisations to rebalance the influence exerted on the curriculum by subject specialist communities rather than the state.
