The role of a pollen bank in the Tree Genetic Improvement Program in Québec (Canada)

Abstract

In Québec, 83 first-generation seed orchards destined to produce seeds from genetically improved trees have been established since 1973. Consequently, the Tree Genetic Improvement Program uses a very large quantity of pollen in order to carry out the controlled pollination projects in those seed orchards. Moreover, controlled pollination is carried out within a very short time-frame and very often the receptivity period occurs before the time of pollen dispersion. It is for these reasons that the pollen bank was created in Québec. This manuscript summarize the process of long term preservation of a large quantity of tree pollen. It is possible to preserve the pollen of coniferous trees on a large scale for up to five years. It is more difficult to manipulate the pollen of deciduous trees.

Quatre vingt-trois vergers à graines de première génération furent établis en 1973 afin de produire des graines provenant d'arbres génétiquement améeliorés. Le Programme d'amélioration génétique des arbres forestiers nécessite l'utilisation de très grandes quantités de pollen Iors de la réalisation de travaux de pollinisation dirigée et de masse dans ces vergers. De plus, les travaux de pollinisation doivent être réalisés à l'intérieur de seulement quelques jours et souvent les inflorescences femelles deviennent réceptives avant que le pollen ne soit disséminé. C'est pour ces raisons que fut créé la banque de pollen en 1988. Ce document résume l'ensemble des procédés utilisés pour conserver à long terme des grandes quantités de pollen d'arbres forestiers. II est actuellement possible de conserver le pollen des arbres résineux durant plus de cinq ans mais il est beaucoup plus difficile de conserver celui des arbres feuillus.
