SUMMARY
This paper describes the development of an adsorbent system for the removal of metal ions from contaminated waters generated by the metals plating industry. The crabshell adsorbent, or ‘biosorbent’ is derived from waste biomass produced by the food industry.
A treatment process system was designed and constructed, and the technology tested in relation to on-line effluent on an industrial scale. This was backed by a series of laboratory experiments, the results of which provide a better understanding of the material and help realise its potential as a commercial product.
The technology is shown to operate successfully within the rigours of an industrial context. The developed treatment system is robust, relatively compact and simple to operate. With further development, this technology may present a much needed solution to the pressures placed upon industry bv both present and future environmental legislation.
