The McCarthy Teapot Test

Abstract

Expectancy has often been declared to be the single most important factor in the success or failure of any hypnotic intervention. Given this truism that expectancy is so crucial, this article shows how a potential patient’s expectancy can be influenced and lowered or raised by the words and actions of the therapist. The essence of this innovative, simple, and quick method is that it is an expectancy-enhancement procedure that masquerades as a hypnotizability assessment. What makes this method powerful is the author’s emphasis on the theatrical components of therapist performance (it even includes acting instructions). No one fails this test.

Abstract : Es wurde oft dargestellt, daß die Erwartungshaltung der einzig wichtigte Faktor bezüglich Erfolg oder Mißerfolg einer hypnotischen Intervention sei. Nimmt man nun diese Binsenweisheit, daß Erwartungshaltung derart entscheidend ist, zeigt dieser Artikel, wie eine potentielle Erwartungshaltung eines Patienten durch Worte und Aktionen des Therapeuten beeinflusst und abgeschwächt oder verstärkt werden können. Der Kern dieser innovativen, einfachen und schnellen Methode ist, daß sie eine Prozedur zur Anhebung der Erwartungshaltung darstellt, die wie ein Test auf Hypnotisierbarkeit fungieren kann. Was diese Methode so kraftvoll macht, ist die Betonung des Autors auf den theatralen Komponenten der Darbietung des Therapeuten. (Sie enthält sogar Anleitungen zum Schauspiel.) Niemand fällt in diesem Test durch.

Tenant pour acquis le truisme de l’importance de l’expectative, cet article montre comment les attentes potentielles du patient peuvent être influencées, et partant, diminuées ou augmentées, par les mots et les actions du thérapeute. L’essence de cette méthode innovante, simple et rapide consiste à faire passer une procédure visant à susciter les attentes pour une évaluation de la sensibilité hypnotique. La valeur de cette méthode tient à l’accent qui est mis par l’auteur sur l’aspect théâtral de la performance du thérapeute (elle comprend même des instructions d’art dramatique). Personne n’échoue ce test.

Considerando la aparente verdad de que la expectativa es tan crucial, este artículo muestra cómo la expectativa potencial del paciente puede ser influenciada, disminuida o aumentada por las palabras y acciones del terapeuta. La esencia de este método rápido, innovador y simple es que es un procedimiento para mejorar la expectativa que se enmascara como una evaluación hipnótica. Lo que hace poderoso este método es el énfasis del autor sobre los componentes teatrales de la actuación del terapeuta (inclusive se incluyen instrucciones de actuación). Nadie reprueba esta prueba.
