Ego activity and ego passivity in hypnosis

Pages 238-251 | Received 20 Jul 1971, Published online: 31 Jan 2008

Abstract

A case study is presented to demonstrate activity and passivity of the hypnotic subject's ego in response to the hypnotist's suggestion. A posthypnotic suggestion, its sequelae, and antecedent associated via similarity of affect are used to illustrate the newly developing psychoanalytic theory of ego activity and ego passivity. The concepts of ego passivity and activity are carefully differentiated from their behavioral counterparts.
