Pages 1-4 | Received 08 Nov 1978, Published online: 31 Jan 2008

Abstract

The purpose of writing a journal paper is discussed, emphasizing that it is intended to communicate a meaningful observation as simply and effectively as possible, that it is necessary to place the contribution in the context of the existing literature, if only to avoid reinventing the wheel. The function of a scientific journal as well as the personal benefits derived from contributing to the literature of the field are outlined.
