Synthesis of optimal pulse-width-modulated control systems via equivalent control policies

Abstract

This paper presents a method of finding the optimal pulse-width-modulated input sequence from the equivalent pulse-amplitude-modulated input sequence. The optimal pulse-amplitude-modulated input is obtained using either the discrete maximum principle or dynamic programming. Both linear time-varying and time-invariant systems are considered for a class of quadratic performance index. A third-order numerical example is solved.
