The massive Ohangwena II aquifer in northern Namibia

Pages 173-174 | Published online: 26 Mar 2013

Notes

1. Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Rössing together with Arandis and other smaller towns are supplied by the Central Namib Water Scheme (CNWS). Water is extracted from aquifers under the Kuiseb River and Omaruru River delta (OMDEL). These resources are periodically recharged by the flooding of the rivers which are otherwise dry. Approximately 3.5 Mm3 was available per year. The Omdel Dam has been built to precipitate clay sediment in the river water after which clean water is allowed to replenish the aquifer. This storage method prevents evaporation. The OMDEL scheme now provides 8.5 Mm3 per year Citation[5].
