The environment and the social value of tourism

Pages 219-223 | Received 04 Feb 1985, Published online: 25 Feb 2007

Abstract

Social tourism emerged as a product of the assigned right of workers to paid leave (in 1936). With a major goal of ensuring access to tourism to the widest possible spectrum of the population, social tourism championed also a more worthy and noble relationship between tourism and the environments and societies it serves and interacts with. This paper examines the manner in which that philosophy is engendered and its role and value in encouraging and promoting a proper respect for both the natural and human environment.
