Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse whether the incidence of cleft lip and palate has increased since refuse incineration started. The study comprised a case study in the county of Skaraborg and a register study in 18 Swedish boroughs with incinerators. The case study contained a patient investigation (interviews and scrutiny of case records) and an exposure assessment including a meteorological dispersal calculation. The register study was based on information from the central register of malformations and the medical birth register. The results of the case and register studies did not demonstrate an increased risk of cleft lip and palate in the areas studied since the start of refuse incineration.
