Abstract
With special reference to a World Bank‐assisted project, this paper draws attention to a common feature of livestock development programmes in Nigeria, a lack of integration of the crop and livestock subsectors, a general misfit between strategies and the existing local conditions and inability of programmes to significantly boost production and improve the nutritional status of the people. It is proffered that the country needs to prioritise its livestock development process and to place emphasis on integrating livestock with arable farming and on proper use of material and human resources. The necessity for consultation with local people and ensuring that programmes benefit from local knowledge and are fitting in ecological, social and economic terms is also stressed.
