This paper gives a brief survey of the application capability of the Geographical Information System (GIS) in Environmental Resources systems. The study area chosen for this purpose has a mixed landuse pattern, in addition to being a highly industrialized area in Bombay (India). The impact assessment has been limited to the assessment of air quality. The air quality has been quantified in terms of the Pollutant Standard Index (PSI), a widely accepted air quality indicator. The work has been carried out in a PC based GIS environment. The resultant outputs obtained in the course of the study reveal that the study area has a air quality level ranging from 50% of NAAQS to the prescribed NAAQS air pollutant concentrations, with the PSI index varying from 80 to 120 indicating a moderate to unhealthful health effect descriptor. It can be concluded that the GIS can be successfully used in the context of Environmental Systems.
