This study evaluated the optimal range of sodium chloride (salt) in a soil and water mixture using Vibrio harveyi, a bioluminescent marine bacterium, for terrestrial toxicity testing. These results suggest that the salt range for this toxicity test with soil is between 7 and 11 percent with the greatest bioluminescence at 9 and 10%. The influence of salt was determined by the amount of bioluminescence in the reaction mixture. The use of this toxicity test for evaluating terrestrial samples is discussed.
