This research review was written by Jessica Hua, M.A., and Nick Kanas, M.D., CGP, FAGPA. Ms. Hua is a doctoral student in clinical psychology at the University of Missouri (MU). She is completing her pre-doctoral internship in clinical psychology at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. For the past four years, she has provided both individual and group psychotherapy at the MU Psychological Services Clinic and Missouri Psychiatric Center. She has conducted research examining cognitive biases in extremely positive schizotypy individuals with increased psychosis risk, as well as research examining neurobiological correlates of psychosis risk. Dr. Kanas is a Professor Emeritus (Psychiatry) at the University of California, San Francisco, where he was the former Director of the Group Therapy Training Program and conducted research on therapy groups for patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. He also conducted NASA-funded research on group process issues involving astronauts working in space. Dr. Kanas has written and edited research reviews for the International Journal of Group Psychotherapy for more than 20 years.
