Pages 601-606 | Received 08 Apr 1974, Published online: 17 May 2010

Summary

This paper examines the educational philosophy for a new approach to the teaching of mathematics to science and engineering undergraduates. It is shown that there is a need for a more practically‐orientated course in which the student is more able to get a feel for the various techniques. The case is argued for an increased role to be played by the digital computer, particularly the greater use in interactive terminals. Finally, some ideas on implementation are presented.
