The membrane analogy, Green's function, conformal maps, and the Plateau problem

Pages 557-559 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

The fascinating interplay between mathematics and mechanics is becoming more popular.

The present article simply points out some known facts. For example, it is known that a minimal potential energy of a membrane corresponds to a minimal surface area. The relations between deflections of membranes and conformal maps are less well known, and the relation with Plateau problems appears to have been overlooked.
