Providing assistance for mathematics students on a needs basis

Our mathematics department has traditionally operated on the basis of lectures supported by unstructured tutorials. Over recent years, attendance at and participation in these tutorials has been declining in second and higher year mathematics courses. A more efficient way of providing this sort of tutorial assistance is described in this article.
