Discovering relationships and patterns by exploring pentagonal and generalized pentagonal numbers

The pentagonal numbers are defined both algebraically and by a figure. A discovery‐type approach is used to find some basic properties of these numbers. The pentagonal numbers are then generalized in a natural way, a table is provided, and several properties are observed.
