A context for introducing vector spaces

Pages 893-902 | Received 17 Apr 1996, Published online: 09 Jul 2006

I shall discuss an approach to vector spaces which is suitable for able first year students who do not intend to major in mathematics. In this approach I introduce vector space concepts while studying the behaviour of systems of linear equations. This approach will be compared and contrasted with a similar approach adopted by Strang. I shall also point out some difficulties which my students have experienced with this approach.
