Beyond the hermeneutic/scientific controversy: A case for a clinically sensitive empirical research paradigm in psychoanalysis

ABSTRACT

This article is devoted to the topic of the conditions for a constructive interdisciplinary dialogue between psychoanalytic theory and practice and research in mind disciplines neighbouring psychoanalysis applied to the concept of psychoanalytic process. The first section reviews the contemporary controversy about psychoanalysis and research and the contributions that different disciplines—such as empirical research in progress in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, in attachment and the early mother–infant relationship, and neurosciences—propose for the construction of theory in psychoanalysis. The gaps in the scientific investigation of central aspects of the psychoanalytic conception are highlighted, such as the dyadic nature of the construction of the experience in therapy and the relationship between the implicit and explicit levels of the analytic relationship. The article concludes by laying the foundations for a novel research programme for psychoanalysis that addresses the outstanding gaps.

Cet article est consacré à la question des conditions permettant un dialogue pluridisciplinaire constructif entre la théorie et la pratique psychanalytiques d’une part et, d’autre part, la recherche dans d’autres disciplines voisines de la psychanalyse explorant le psychisme et appliquées au concept de processus psychanalytique. Dans une première partie, l’auteur passe en revue la controverse actuelle au sujet de la psychanalyse et de la recherche, ainsi que les contributions apportées par différentes disciplines – recherche empirique dans les domaines de la psychothérapie et de la psychanalyse, des relations d’attachement et des liens précoces mère-bébé, et des neurosciences – à la construction de la théorie en psychanalyse. Les brèches dans l’investigation scientifique des aspects primordiaux de la conception psychanalytique, tels que la nature dyadique de la construction de l’expérience en thérapie et la relation entre les niveaux implicites et explicites de la relation analytique seront mises en lumière. L’auteur conclut son article en posant les fondations d’un programme de recherche novateur pour la psychanalyse qui tienne compte de ces brèches.

Der Artikel widmet sich den Bedingungen für einen konstruktiven interdisziplinären Dialog zwischen psychoanalytischer Theorie und Praxis auf der einen Seite und der Forschung in den an die Psychoanalyse angrenzenden Seelenwissenschaften, die auf das Konzept des psychoanalytischen Prozesses angewendet werden, auf der anderen Seite. Der erste Abschnitt befasst sich mit der aktuellen Kontroverse über Psychoanalyse und Forschung und den Beiträgen verschiedener Disziplinen – wie laufende empirische Forschungen zur Psychotherapie und Psychoanalyse, zur Bindungs- und frühen Mutter-Kind-Beziehung und zu den Neurowissenschaften – zur Theoriebildung in der Psychoanalyse. Die Lücken in der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung zentraler Aspekte des psychoanalytischen Konzepts werden aufgezeigt, beispielsweise die dyadische Natur der Therapieerfahrung und die Beziehung zwischen den impliziten und expliziten Ebenen der analytischen Beziehung. Der Beitrag schließt damit, die Grundzüge eines neuartigen psychoanalytischen Forschungsprogramms zu skizzieren, das an den noch offenen Lücken ansetzt.

Il presente articolo tratta delle condizioni necessarie per l’instaurarsi di un dialogo interdisciplinare costruttivo tra la teoria e la pratica psicoanalitica da una parte e la ricerca in discipline della mente vicine alla psicoanalisi dall’altra – un dialogo che ruota attorno al concetto di processo psicoanalitico. La prima parte dello scritto passa in rassegna la controversia contemporanea su psicoanalisi e ricerca, e oltre a ciò gli apporti che diverse discipline (come la ricerca empirica sui progressi in psicoterapia e in psicoanalisi, o sull’attaccamento e sulle relazioni precoci tra madre e bambino, o la ricerca nell’ambito delle neuroscienze) offrono per la costruzione della teoria in psicoanalisi. Verranno altresì evidenziate le lacune nella ricerca scientifica rispetto a elementi centrali della concezione psicoanalitica, quali ad esempio la natura diadica della costruzione dell’esperienza in terapia e la relazione tra livello implicito e livello esplicito della relazione analitica. L’articolo si conclude gettando le basi per un innovativo programma di ricerca in psicoanalisi il cui scopo sarà precisamente quello di occuparsi delle lacune qui indicate.

Este es un artículo dedicado al tópico de las condiciones para un diálogo interdisciplinario constructivo entre la teoría y la práctica psicoanalítica y la investigación en disciplinas de la mente vecinas al psicoanálisis aplicado al concepto de proceso psicoanalítico. Se revisa la controversia contemporánea sobre psicoanálisis e investigación y las contribuciones que distintas disciplinas –como la investigación empírica en proceso en psicoterapia y psicoanálisis, en apego y relación temprana madre-infante, y las neurociencias–, proponen para la construcción de teoría en psicoanálisis. Se destacan las brechas en la investigación científica de aspectos centrales de la concepción psicoanalítica como son la naturaleza diádica de la construcción de la experiencia en terapia y la relación entre los niveles implícitos y explícitos de la relación analítica. Se concluye planteando los fundamentos de un programa de investigación novedoso para el psicoanálisis que dé cuenta de las brechas destacadas.
