Transience and hope: A return to Freud in a time of pandemic

ABSTRACT

This essay is about what it is like to read Freud again in the time of the coronavirus pandemic. It offers a close reading of Freud’s essay “On Transience” and it brings to light how it might be read differently with the thoughts of world-catastrophe on our minds.

Passagèreté et espoir : un retour à Freud en temps de pandémie

L'auteur de cet article évoque ce que signifie de relire Freud aujourd'hui en ce temps de la pandémie de Covid-19. Il propose une lecture attentive du texte de Freud « Passagèreté », qui met en évidence une autre lecture possible de ce texte à la lumière de ce que suscite la catastrophe mondiale dans notre esprit.

Vergänglichkeit und Hoffnung: eine Rückbesinnung auf Freud in einer Zeit der Pandemie

In diesem Essay geht es darum, wie es ist, Freud in der Zeit der Coronavirus-Pandemie erneut zu lesen. Durch eine genaue Betrachtung von Freuds Essay „Vergänglichkeit“ kommt zum Vorschein, wie Freuds Abhandlung anders ausgelegt werden könnte, während uns die Gedanken an eine weltweite Katastrophe beschäftigen.

Il presente lavoro parla dell'esperienza di rileggere Freud durante la pandemia di coronavirus. Il saggio freudiano "Caducità" viene analizzato in queste pagine attraverso una lettura ravvicinata che mette anche in luce come il modo di leggerlo possa cambiare laddove si abbia nella mente il pensiero di una catastrofe su scala globale.

El presente ensayo trata sobre cómo es releer a Freud en tiempos de la pandemia del coronavirus. Ofrece una lectura detenida del ensayo “Sobre la transitoriedad” de Freud y saca a la luz cómo podría leerse de diferente manera teniendo en mente la idea de catástrofe mundial.
