Abstract
The recognition of psychology as a profession in Brazil was initiated by a number of societies of psychology. The first law was voted by Parliament on August 27, 1962, and the task was completed by a second law in 1971. The first law was a great victory of psychologists from the different societies, achieved with some help of friendly members of Parliament. Twenty years after, we still celebrate August 27 as the day of psychologists. After the laws were published, a Council of Psychology was created in each state. Also, a Federal' Council was established under the Ministry of Work. The members of these Councils are elected for a period of three years by all psychologists who have this title. The se Councils set and maintain the standards of training of psychologists, their work and ethical and legal problems.
