Characteristics of the System of Production of History-of-Psychology Literature, 1975–1986

Abstract

We used Psychological Abstracts to identify a large international sample of history-of-psychology literature that was published from 1975 through 1986. Information was obtained on such producer characteristics as: The language in which each publication was written; the country (or American state) from which it originated; and authorship gender and number. Differences in productivity were examined as a function of these variables and their combinations; comparisons were made with a random sample of psychological literature and with previously published findings regarding publication in psychology. Conclusions were drawn regarding the history of psychology considered as a literature-producing enterprise.

Nous avons choisi la revue Psychological Abstracts pour comparer les nombreux échantillons internationaux sur l'histoire de la psychologie entre 1975 et 1986. L'infomation recueillie a été basée sur les faits suivants: La langue dans laquelle l'article a été écrit; le pays (ou la province américaine) d'o[ugrave] il provenait; et le nombre des auteurs et Ieurs genres. Les diffkrences en productivité ont été examinées en fonction de ces faits et en tenant compte de toutes les combinaisons possibles entre eux. Ceux-ci ont été cornparés A d'autres échantillons choisis au hasard parmi la littérature psychologique et ont été aussi cornparés aux renseignements obtenus dans le pasé concernant les publications sur la psychologie en général. Des conclusions ont été tirées regardant l'histoire de la psychologie vue comme une activité génératrice de publications.
