Memoires exacte et inferentielle en arithmetique mentale

Abstract

Dans cette recherche, nous cherchons à éprouver la pertinence de la distinction de deux mémoires qualifiées d'exacte et d'inférentielle. Dans les deux expériences, sur 140 élèves de Cours Moyen et 456 étudiants respectivement, les sujets prennent d'abord connaissance d'un matériel numérique: un problème arithmétique ou un calcul mental (e.g. 86 + 47 + 93 + 52). Ensuite, ils sont interrogés à la fois sur des données exactes contenues dans ce matériel et sur des donne es susceptibles d'en être inférées. La recherche ne confirme pas clairement une inde pendance des deux types de mémoire. Enrevanche, elle apporte des évidences en faveur d'une moindre sensibilité à l'amorçage de la mémoire exacte. Elle suggère aussi que l'leffet de distance peut, en calcul mental, être differencié suivant les opérations arithmétiques: les opérations additives y sont plus sensibles que les opérations multiplicatives. Inthis researchwe investigate the relevance of a distinction between an exact memory and an inferential memory. Inthe two studies, on 140 fourth- and fifth-graders and on 456 adult students respectively, the subjects are first informed of a numerical material: anarithmetic verbal problem or a mental calculation (e.g. 86 + 47 + 93 + 52). Then they are tested both on exact data and on data that canbe inferred from the information previously given. The research does not clearly support an independence between the two forms of memory. However, it shows evidence for a lower sensitivity to priming of the exact memory. Furthermore, the second study demonstrates that the mental arithmetic split effect (Ashcraft, 1992) can be differentiated following the arithmetical operations: additive operations are more sensitive to it than multiplicative operations.
