OBSERVATIONS ON LITTORAL FISHES OF ISRAEL II. H. LARVAL DEVELOPMENT AND METAMORPHOSIS OF BLENNIUS PAVO RISSO (TELEOSTEI, BLENNIIDAE)

Pages 81-91 | Received 30 May 1963, Published online: 30 Apr 2013

ABSTRACT

The larval and postlarval development of Blennius pavo Risso and its transition from planktonic to benthonic life are described in some detail.

At a water temperature of 24° (± 1°) and at a pH of 7.4–7.6, the larvae hatch after 225–235 hours and begin to feed one day after hatching, At the age of 27 days the fishes assume a benthic mode of life and their behaviour is then identical with that of young blennies, observed in natural surroundings.
