ABSTRACT
A new species of Pseudamnicola (Hydrobiidae, Prosobranchia, Mollusca) is described from a few springs along the Dead Sea and Wadi Zin area, Israel. The genus Pseudamnicola has never before been collected from the Near East. Its inclusion in Pallary's list (1924), is based on mistaken identification. The nearest area in which it is known is some 1000 km north of the Dead Sea, in Turkey. The invasion of Pseudamnicola into Israel (probably through the Orontes and Jordan systems) took place during Pliocene times. Connections with the north were probably cut off during the middle Pleistocene, after which the local populations underwent extreme isolation and rapid speciation.
