Pages 177-192 | Received 14 Dec 1978, Published online: 30 Apr 2013

ABSTRACT

Species and numbers of appendicularians were recorded from plankton samples which were collected monthly for a period of one year in the water off Elat. The vertical distribution of the species was determined by sampling at three depth levels. Twenty species were identified, including one genus and five species which are new records for the Red Sea (Pelagopleura sp., Oikopleura comutogastra, Fritillaria gracilis, F. haplostoma, F. messanensis and F. venusta). The most frequent and abundant species were: O. longicauda, O. rufescens, F. borealis sargassi, O. fusiformis, F. formica digitata and O. graciloides. Significant positive correlations were found between water temperature and abundance of all these species excepting O. rufescens.
