THE THALIACEANS, A GROUP OF ANIMALS REFRACTORY TO LESSEPSIAN MIGRATION: AN UPDATED SURVEY OF THEIR POPULATIONS IN THE LEVANTINE BASIN AND THE RED SEA

Pages 91-100 | Accepted 01 May 1998, Published online: 30 Apr 2013

ABSTRACT

The thaliacean faunas of the Levantine Basin and of the Red Sea are defined and compared. The Mediterranean fauna has a temperate Atlantic Ocean origin, whereas that of the Red Sea is of a tropical Indian Ocean origin. A few cosmopolitan species are common to both seas. Until now, no thahacean species from one sea has succeeded in crossing the Suez Canal and colonizing the other sea.
