ABSTRACT

The paper gives the first results of a recent taxonomie survey of Collembola of northern Israel. Twenty-two species new to Israel were collected and 4 new species are described: Tremoisea israelica n. sp. (Neanuridae) from Mt. Carmel, and three species of Pseudosinella (Entomobryidae), one from Mt. Carmel, P. montiscarmeli n. sp., and two from Mt. Hermon, P. biocellata n. sp. and P. pori n. sp., both collected from litter under Juniperus drupacea, a relict of the Tertiary flora, in Mt. Hermon open deciduous scrub forest of the oro-Mediterranean belt. A revision was made of Hypogastrura tethyca Ellis, formerly described only from Crete, and of the genus Pseudosinella from Israel. The importance of the collembolan fauna to Levant biogeography is discussed.
