Attempts to Increase Pollination by Spraying Crops with Sugar Syrup

Pages 61-64 | Received 10 Feb 1965, Published online: 24 Mar 2015

SUMMARY

More honeybees visited plots of apple and field beans after these were sprayed with sucrose syrup, but nearly all the bees collected syrup. Fewer bees visited the flowers in sprayed than in unsprayed plots, and less fruit was set. The effect of spraying was very local and did not increase the number of bees visiting the flowers elsewhere on the crop.
