The Sugars of Some Common Philippine Nectars

Pages 19-22 | Received 27 Sep 1975, Published online: 24 Mar 2015

Summary

The nectar sugar composition of 40 common Philippine species was studied with emphasis on maltose detection. Use of the Van Handel quantitative method made it possible to study very small samples with high accuracy. Sucrose, glucose and fructose constituted 2–95% of total sugars. In two species, native to the islands of Luzon and Panay, maltose was detected, and confirmed by infra-red spectroscopy. Possible sources of origin of maltose arc discussed, as a contaminant of the nectar.
